BSL-2 and BSL-3 Requirements for Mobile Laboratory Systems

Mobile laboratories play a critical role in the rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases. However, designing mobile laboratories, particularly those operating at BSL-2 and BSL-3 levels, requires much more precise engineering processes.

BSL-2 laboratories are designed to work with medium-risk pathogens and include basic safety protocols. BSL-3 laboratories feature advanced filtration, air pressure control, and double-layered entry sections to safely handle high-risk microorganisms transmitted by aerosols.

Technical requirements for mobile BSL-3 laboratory design:

  • Negative pressure chambers

  • HEPA dual-stage filtration system

  • Decontamination areas

  • Controlled entry and exit tunnels

  • Uninterrupted airflow monitoring

If these features are not implemented correctly, the laboratory cannot operate safely in the field. Therefore, mobile laboratories must be as reliable as standard building laboratories and comply with international biosafety norms.
